group 5

The elements of group 5 (formerly called group Vb in North America and Va in Europe) include the transition metals vanadium, niobium, and tantalum, and the transactinide dubnium. Due to the existence of d electron levels, these elements, like all transition metals, tend to form colored compounds, possess variable valences, and form a great number of inorganic complexes in which the coordinate bonds are formed to the atom or ion. The atoms of the elements in group 5 have five valence electrons.
